Although this is of course a behavior that could be expected of someone in her position, the jury recognized Gina’s engagement with the LIFE Award for Integrity, because she proved herself under extraordinarily difficult conditions. The situation in question was the integration of Merck Consumer Care and Dihon with the Bayer OTC business in China. This huge task needed to be completed within a very short timeframe of just four months. It involved deciding which of the 2,500 employees could be taken over and which could not. Gina Lu made a case for a transparent and therefore elaborate selection process in which every employee was invited to an individual discussion. In more than 2,500 one-on-one conversations, all employees were evaluated according to their skills in order to achieve a balance between what was best for them and best for Bayer. Gina also implemented an outplacement program to help every affected employee find a new job prospect.. “It’s hard when you see employees leave the company. I tried to find a way that was as fair and reconcilable as possible,” says Gina.
