Verrazano, an Italian about whom little is known, sailed into New York Harbour in 1524 and named it Angouleme. He described it as ‘a very agreeable situation located within two small hills in the midst of which flowed a great river’.
    1524年,一名鲜有人知的意大利人维拉萨诺驶进纽约港,并将其命名为安古拉姆。他对该港做了以下描述:”夹在两山之间,一条大河从中涌出的一个理想之所“。
    PS:about whom little is known,这是个定语从句,修饰Italian,其中about whom是从句的宾语,指Italian,此处应将介词前置。原句应为”an Italian is known about little“,译为“鲜有人知的意大利人”。
    PS++:a very agreeable situation,译为“理想之所”。
    PS++++:within two small hills in the midst of which flowed a great river,译为“两山之间,大河涌出”。

    Though Verrazano is by no means considered to be a great explorer, his name will probably remain immortal, for on November 21st, 1964, the longest suspension bridge in the world was named about him.
    虽然维拉萨诺绝不算一个伟大的探险家,但是他的名字仍有可能永垂不朽,因为在1964年11月21日,世界上最长的悬索桥以他的名字命名。
    PS:by no means,绝不,否定副词。
    PS++:remain immortal,永垂不朽。
    PS++++:be named about sb,以某人名字命名。

    The Verrazano Bridge, which was designed by Othmar Ammann, joins Brooklyn to Staten Island. It has a span of 4260 feet. The bridge is so long that the shape of the earth had to be taken into account by its designer.
    维拉萨诺大桥,由奥斯马·阿曼设计,联通了布鲁克林和斯塔顿岛,全场4260英尺。由于桥身太长,设计者不得不考虑了地表的形状。
    PS:be taken into account,被考虑到。

    The great towers support four huge cables. The towers are built on immense underwater platforms made of steel and concrete. The platforms extend to a depth of over 100 feet under the sea.
    两座巨塔撑起了四根巨大的钢缆。巨塔建在水下巨大的钢筋混凝土平台之上,平台深入海面100英尺之下。
    PS:steel and concrete,钢筋混凝土,专有名词,见了n次了。

    These along took sixteen months to build. Above the surface of the water, the towers rise to a height of nearly 700 feet. They support the cables from which the bridge has been suspended.
    仅这两塔就花了16个月进行建造。这两塔高出水面近700英尺,支撑着悬索桥面的钢缆。
    PS:Above the surface of the water,水面之上。

    Each of the four cables contains 26108 lengths of wire. It has been estimated that if the bridge were packed with cars, it would still only be carrying a third of its total capacity.
    四根钢缆中的每一根都有26108股钢绳组成。据估计,即使桥面停满了汽车,也只是这座桥总载重的三分之一。
    PS:It is estimated that,据估计,固定用法。
    PS++:pack A with B,用B塞满A。

    However, size and strength are not the only important things about this bridge. Despite its immensity, it is both simple and elegant, fulfilling its designer’s dream to create ‘an enormous object drawn as faintly as possible’.
    然而,规模和载重都不是这座桥最重要的。尽管它很大,它也简约且优雅,充满着它的设计者”尽可能用简约线条勾勒庞然大物“的梦想。
    PS:as faintly as possible,尽可能细微地。

    补充:分数的用法。
    英文中分数的用法,有以下几个准则:
    1)分子用基数词,分母用序数词,分子大于1,分母用复数。例如:
    one third: 三分之一 two thirds: 三分之二
    其中,1/2通常用”half”计数,1/4通常用”quarter”计数,因为标注时钟通常这样写,所以沿用至日常。
    2) 当分数很复杂时,分母和分子均可以使用基数词,中间用over连接。例如:
    35/99,读作”thirty-five over ninety-nine”.
    3)带分数的读法为:整数 and 分数,例如:
    三又五分之一,读作:three and one fifth.
    4) 百分数是一种特殊的分数,用percent来表示百分数,例如:
    sixty-nine percent 69% one-hundred percent 100%
    (好像日本动漫里经常用哦)
