Now that you have identified examples of information technology (anything that is a computer, has a computer inside, or works with computers) you can now look more closely at the impact computers have on your day-to-day lives; it might be more far-reaching than you think.
Many everyday activities are influenced or controlled by computers, sometimes in ways you might not expect. Anyone driving a car will be interacting with computers, as they control key systems in a car, and traffic management systems such as traffic lights and electronic signs. If you shop in a supermarket, the stock levels, tills, and store security will all be controlled by computers.
Computers also have a huge impact on the world of work. Not everyone wants to be a programmer, but there are now very few careers where computers do not have a profound influence on the way we work, sometimes in ways you wouldn’t expect.
Even traditional industries such as the law are becoming more dependent on computers. Manual systems and processes, such as sharing paper-based contracts to be signed by multiple people, have been replaced by computer systems, which automatically manage the flow of information. Law firms need people who are skilled in using these systems, and also people who are expert at designing and maintaining them. As a result, law firms are employing more graduates from STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) backgrounds than ever before.
Through artificial intelligence (AI), computers are increasingly being used to make decisions more quickly and more accurately than humans are able to. This is more prominent than you might expect; features most people will be familiar with, such as predictive text, are using AI technology. A phone or tablet now learns the words you are likely to type and modifies its predictions accordingly. Many companies are now using automated chatbots, which are programmed to respond automatically to questions, to deliver customer support instead of humans.
3D printing is transforming what’s possible in manufacturing. In medicine, 3D printing means that prosthetic limbs can now be produced more quickly and cheaply than ever before, with many people predicting that this will be the next revolution in medicine. As similar technology becomes more widespread, there will be more opportunities for people to receive prosthetic limbs that are tailored to their needs and desires, rather than having to use a generic mass-produced prosthetic limb.
This technology is also being used in space: a 3D print on-board the International Space Station is now being used to provide tools and parts to the crew much more quickly than has previously been possible. Formerly, such parts as were needed on the ISS had to be flown into space on supply craft, which was an expensive and complex process. Closer to home, this means that people all around the world can become producers and makers. As this technology becomes more affordable, more people can design and print their own projects, or get 3D printed replacement parts more quickly and easily.
This technology may seem a long way away from any primary Computing curriculum, but these might be tools and systems that many of this generation of children will need to master in their future careers. There are many different ways in which you can prepare younger learners to adapt to new technologies and ways of working. For example, you could plan for them to make a chatbot in Scratch (a programming language widely used in primary schools) to mimic the function of a smart assistant, or to create 3D models in Tinkercad (a simple, easy-to-use 3D modelling package).
